Overview

Redefining the standard of contemporary living through adaptive reuse, The Arc is a complete renovation project that breathes new life into an existing structure. Our approach went beyond a simple interior reconfiguration; we completely reimagined the spatial flow to meet the uncompromising standards of our client, creating a home of fluidity and modern luxury. Externally, the project finds its name and identity in its defining feature: a sculptural double-skin of structural arches. By repurposing the building’s original envelope, we created a multi-purpose shield that offers solar protection and privacy while gifting the villa a distinct, rhythmic aesthetic that creates a bold new silhouette in the neighborhood.

The diagram illustrates the evolution of THE ARC project from the initial irregularly shaped building. The intervention involves retaining the existing slabs, filling the voids to streamline the form into a more rectangular volume, and adding an extra floor. These adjustments allow for an increase in the built area and better optimization of space, while respecting the original structure.

The building's envelope is a veritable contemporary mashrabiya: it protects the building from solar radiation while allowing natural light to filter through its cut-out arches. It filters light and heat gain, while the interior, primarily glazed, benefits from controlled natural lighting.

A second skin is placed over the structure, thus playing a dual role. It provides a structural function while enhancing the building's aesthetics. This envelope unifies the architectural expression and enhances the overall image of THE ARC.

Beneath the arched envelope lies a completely interior structure. The sectional cut highlights the vertical integration of the villa, anchored by a central spiral staircase that pierces through the building's core. Beyond simple circulation, this sculptural void functions as a vital light well, drawing natural illumination from the roof and channeling it deep into the heart of the lower levels.
